Briefing. This project was commissioned by Trixell. The goal was to design a ‘first of its kind’ product: a portable digital X-Ray detector, including a combined storage and charging station. The main focus was to ensure the safe and easy handling of this 3.5kg heavy device, which needed to be swapped constantly between the wallstand and table. The handle became the iconic element of this device. It was essential to create a patient friendly device, which protects the patient when it comes in contact with the naked body parts of the patient. Technical elements like screws were hidden under the smooth shaped rim element, which surrounds the device. The design of the detector embodies the simplicity and sophistication of this new technology.

The main function of the storage station was the charging of the detector. The detector had to be framed from nearly all sides to fit very tightly, in order to ensure continuous contact between the detector and the charging pins. The design gives the user visual reassurance that the detector is well positioned. The “lip” at the front of the charging station allows the user to rest the heavy device and to guide it securely into the charging position.
